Passion for duty drives cop to succeed

- By JO TIMBUONG

KUALA LUMPUR: When Kons Mohd Alifah Safie sets his eyes on a goal, he goes after it until it is achieved.

This determination and passion is what fuels the 28-year-old policeman when he pursues perpetrators, even when he is down or injured.

His job is mentally and physically tiring as he always has to be on the lookout for any criminal activity around the Setapak area for eight hours a day, six days a week, with his safety always at risk.

Recently, Kons Mohd Alifah was injured in the line of duty but managed to catch the suspect he was chasing despite being in pain.

He and his partner from the Setapak police station were patrolling the Air Panas market area when they noticed a man on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the suspect sped off towards Dataran Wangsa Maju after noticing the policemen, prompting a 2km highspeed chase.

The suspect tried to cut off the two officers by stopping abruptly in front of them at the traffic lights.

“The sudden stop caused Kons Mohd Alifah to fall off his motorcycle. He suffered cuts and lacerations on his arms and legs. Despite this, he got up and pursued the suspect on foot, successfully nabbing him,” Supt Mohamad Roy said.

Upon further investigation, the policemen found that the 51-yearold jobless man had a small packet of heroin on him. He also had a record for drug offences, and was put under remand for three days.

Kons Mohd Alifah was later presented with a certificate of appreciation from the force.
