PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian SEA Games Organising Committee (Masoc) are confident of surpassing the RM80mil sponsorship target for the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in August.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also Masoc chairman, said they have already achieved 98% of the total sum needed to organise the Games.

He said this after witnessing the signing of partnership with Grab, the largest ride-hailing and multiservice company.

Masoc welcome Grab as gold sponsor with an estimated sponsorship of more than RM6mil in cash, kind and marketing support via digital platform.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the Masoc secretariat chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong and Grab Malaysia country head Sean Goh at the Grab office in Petaling Jaya yesterday.

“I am proud that Grab has taken this bold move to come forward as a sponsor for the KL 2017 and literally grab the opportunity to strengthen its brand presence in South-East Asia,” said Khairy.

“Although Grab is a relatively young company, which has been in operations for only five years, today, its application is considered a musthave in almost all of our mobile devices.”

Sean said that as a homegrown company, “we are ecstatic to be part of the Games”.

“Firstly, our participation affirms our commitment to ensure all athletes, tourists and supporters have access to safe, convenient and comfortable rides.

“Secondly, we want to help create an eco-friendly sporting event by reducing traffic congestion to and around the venues,” said Sean.

As a sponsor, Grab will also provide services for elderly folks and those with limited mobility during the Games.

Grab will also provide buggy services from security checkpoints to stadium entrances.
