Klang cyclists dedicated to keeping royal town clean
KLANG: A group of residents here have taken it upon themselves to patrol the royal town every weekend on their two-wheelers, keeping an eye on the cleanliness and maintenance of heritage spots.
Dubbed Kelab Warisan Sungai Klang (Klang River Heritage Club), the team has been conducting routine checks on the Kota Bridge and Klang River since late last year.
Its president Jordan Ng said team members would pick up garbage along the way while taking note of areas that require the attention of the authorities, such as the Klang Municipal Council (MPK).
“We also try to think of how to beautify and liven up these places,” he said.
Their cycling outings on both Saturdays and Sundays start from Jalan Tepi Sungai at 7am, covering Taman Pengkalan Batu park, Jalan Pasar and Jalan Gudang Nanas waterfront.
A pit stop at the famous Nasi Kandar Tepi Sungai for breakfast is also a must. Each ride takes about two hours.
“The gentle morning breeze is great for cycling,” Ng said, adding that his wife and two children also joined in most of the time.
He said the picturesque scene of a boat gliding down the calm river strengthened his resolve to clean up Klang River, so that a river cruise could be offered on it.
“Kota Bridge and Klang River are both significant icons with many stories to be told. It is also high time people realised where their drinking water is sourced from,” Ng said.
Team member Yap Kah Sing said the weekly cycling outing was a good platform to nurture friendships, besides keeping an eye on heritage places in their hometown.
“This is something very different from competitive cycling,” said the 30-year-old from Bandar Botanic.
Yap, a regular cyclist, has signed up for Ride for Malaysia.
He said he was looking forward to the event as well as the attractive prizes.
