Revised tourism tax plan a boon for industry

-

IT certainly is a relief for Malaysians, and less burdensome for foreigners, given the revised tourism tax plan that took effect from Aug 1, as reported in “Hotel tax relief ” ( The Star, July 27).

After much debate and talks with industry players and relevant stakeholders, the Tourism and Culture Ministry made that decision, as announced by its minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz. I think the decision is fair and justified.

Malaysians, I believe, will welcome it as we can continue taking holidays locally and enjoying the beauty in our backyard to the fullest.

the world economy has resulted in Malaysians exploring the hidden gems on our own doorstep and lov- ing our beautiful country even more.

It’s a step in the right direction in promoting and enhancing domestic tourism, now that the tourism tax has been called off. A relief indeed for the local tourism sector which had seen a surge in travel by Malaysians to local places of interest.

On the decision to impose a flat rate of RM10 on foreigners, I believe they would be unlikely to feel the pinch as the exchange rate is in their favour. It’s a negligible amount that would not burn a hole in their pocket.

Even for those on a shoestring budget staying at backpackers’ hotels and guest houses, I doubt it would affect their travel budget much as the RM10 flat rate is comparable, on the average, with tourism tax in other countries. However, they always have the option of homestays or premises with fewer than five rooms, if RM10 is such a big deal. This would be a boon for our homestays and Airbnb outfits.

What matters most, apart from the Government being willing to listen to industry players on the tourism tax debate, is ensuring that revenues from the tax are put to good use in further improving the tourism industry in the respective states.
