Just like the nation, the Mydin brand is also turning 60 and marking a new chapter.

SUBANG: This year is significant not only to the nation but also to Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd because they both turn 60.

For Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, the celebration signifies the company’s triumph in the retail and wholesale segment, from its humble beginnings in Kelantan to a homegrown empire of 322 outlets nationwide.

As part of its anniversary celebration, Mydin collaborated with the Star Media Group’s Raise The Flag initiative which seeks to strengthen national pride among Malaysians.

The managing director of Mydin said the initiative is very significant because it is a way to say “thank you” to Malaysia.

“Mydin, being a Malaysian brand, decided to take the opportunity to do what we can for the country.

“People sometimes forget how lucky we are and we only remember this during difficult times, so the message is, we must be grateful.

“We at Mydin are grateful for the position that we are in now,” he told a press conference after the 60th anniversary bash at its outlet in USJ Subang yesterday.

Also present was Star Media Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai who said that Mydin’s participation in the initiative is very meaningful.

“Mydin is a truly Malaysian brand, like the Star Media Group. It has proven how resilient it is, growing into a big company, just like the journey of Malaysia. We are proud to have the support of Mydin in the Raise The Flag campaign,” added Wong.

Mydin, The Star and Malay daily Sinar Harian also received recognition for having “the largest Jalur Gemilang origami circulation nationwide”. The recognition was awarded by the Malaysia Book of Records for their collaboration in circulating 465,000 origami Jalur Gemilang.

Wong said The Star is honoured to receive the recognition as it is testament to the Group’s efforts to further bring the nation together.

Also in conjunction with its 60th anniversary, Mydin has selected 60 schools nationwide to receive 10,000 copies of The Star today; these will be distributed to the students.

There are also promotions, campaigns and activities for customers in conjunction with its anniversary, such as product redemption programmes supported by sponsors, an RM6 promotion for the renewal or registration of Mydin’s “Kad Meriah” membership, and a contest on social media.

Earlier, Ameer thanked and handed out mementoes to Mydin’s main sponsorship partners.

The Raise The Flag initiative will run until Malaysia Day on Sept 16. Under it, a special four-page spread will enable Malaysians to assemble their own mini Jalur Gemilang.

There are also T-shirt templates included in the newspaper’s centrespread. Decorate these with a Malaysian motif and be photographed “wearing” it while holding the flag.

Best poses should be hashtagged #RaiseTheFlagMY on social media. On Facebook, you can share it as: raisetheflagmy.

Refer to the exciting list of prizes, that includes staycations and dining vouchers, in the centrespread.
