Country has a busy week ahead after long break

-

PETALING JAYA: It will be a busy week ahead in the country after a long break with three public holidays.

The Police Commission meeting to be chaired by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to decide Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar’s successor will be held tomorrow morning.

Khalid, who has served the police force for 40 years, will retire tomorrow and a ceremony is expected to be held in Bukit Aman for him.

The nation will also be tuning in to the development involving Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s purported suggestion that Penang exco Phee Boon Poh’s detention by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) in a corruption probe was “illegal”.

The MACC had on Aug 25 given Lim 48 hours to make a public apology and he has yet to do so.

MACC chief Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad has called for a meeting tomorrow to consider the next course of action against Lim.

In the courts, the Federal Court has set Sept 8 for the hearing of the Johor Islamic Religious Council’s application for leave to intervene in the Court of Appeal decision in allowing a Muslim child conceived outside marriage to take his father’s name instead of a “bin Abdullah” patronym.

The ruling was against the National Registration Department which has since filed for an appeal to the Federal Court.

On Sept 9, the nation will celebrate the official birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V after the Government agreed to move the Agong’s birthday from July 29 to Saturday.

The amended date will be in effect for the next five years under the rule of Sultan Muhammad V until 2021.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will be heading to Washington for a working visit on Sept 12 to meet US President Donald Trump.

Najib’s trip follows an invitation by Trump for talks at the White House in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of bilateral ties between Malaysia and the United States.
