Pakatan leaders urge M’sians to support party’s effort for GE
PETALING JAYA: The “Love Malaysia, End Kleptocracy” gathering went on peacefully with minimal police presence.
The rally marked the end of a nationwide roadshow by Pakatan Harapan that started in July.
People started arriving about an hour before the rally kicked off at 4pm with the singing of the Negaraku.
Many of those who showed up came in red T-shirts bearing the event logo.
Police had earlier warned the organiser against holding the rally at the field. However, no arrests were made as at press time.
The event was attended by top Pakatan leaders including its chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos did not turn up despite threatening to set up a fish stall at the venue.
His spokesman said Jamal decided not to make an appearance at the rally after being advised by the authorities.
Several party leaders took to the stage to address the crowd in the evening.
Dr Mahathir urged Malaysians to support Pakatan’s effort in the general election while taking an apparent dig at PAS, which he did not name but described as a political party that wants to create three-cornered fights.
“Those who are creating three-cornered fights are actually supporting Najib, they support him by putting themselves up as a candidate and hope to get some votes in order to reduce Pakatan’s votes,” he said.
Muhyiddin in his speech said the views aired at the rally were for the future of the next generation.
“There are those who doubt our ability to form a good government, but as can be seen today, all the top leaders are together and united at heart,” he said.
Guan Eng pledged that Pakatan would abolish the goods and services tax (GST) if it wins the next general election.
“And the 1Malaysia People’s Aid ( BR1M) will be given to all Malaysians. The rakyat will get the money,” said Lim without elaborating.
Dr Wan Azizah gave a shoutout to her jailed husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Batu MP Tian Chua.
“Our country is our responsibility. Let us be united in carrying out the democratic process with trust,” she said.
