Abdul Rahim is appointed UM’s new VC
PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry has appointed Datuk Abdul Rahim Hashim (pic) as Universiti Malaya (UM) vice-chancellor.
Abdul Rahim will serve from today until Oct 31, 2020, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.
Abdul Rahim was chosen for his expertise, knowledge, experience, and achievements during his tenure as the vice-chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) and his academic work both locally and internationally, added the statement.
The ministry said it hoped Abdul Rahim could continue his achievements and contribute to the success of
UM as a leading university in research, teaching, learning and the empowerment of the community, as well as UM’s ambition to be on the list of 100 best universities in the world.
Abdul Rahim obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Electric and Electronics Engineering from the University of Birmingham and also received an Honorary Doctorate from the university.
He also went for the Harvard Advance Management Programme (AMP) in 1997.
The ministry expressed its gratitude to Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Amin Jalaludin, who served as vice-chancellor from November 2013 to April 2017.
Under his tenure, the ministry said that UM managed to achieve various recognitions in the glocal stage in many fields.
The ministry also gave its thanks to deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international) Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, who served as acting vice-chancellor from May until October.
