JASIN: It took a factory worker three decades to own two gold bracelets and a necklace worth RM6,000. And she would not part with it for any price.

The 58-year-old would wear the items with pride during wedding receptions and other special occasions.

But on Nov 18, she was heartbroken when she found her jewellery missing from her closet.

She frantically summoned her family members to help search for her precious items.

It was then that all hell broke loose, when she found out that her two daughters had pawned them.

Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Arshad Abu said the woman had first thought her jewellery were misplaced, or stolen by visitors.

“That was until she stumbled upon pawnshop receipts in her eldest daughter’s name, in a drawer,” he added.

DSP Arshad said the housewife from Rumah Awam in Merlimau had bought the jewellery after saving part of her meagre salary of RM250 when she started working in the 1980s.

He said police began investigations after a report was lodged on Nov 23.

“I feel sorry for the poor lady,” he said, adding that both sisters were detained the following day.

The elder sister, a 38-year-old widow, admitted pawning the items.

It is learnt that the younger sister, 20, told police she had only accompanied her sister to the pawn shop without suspecting anything.

DSP Arshad said the jewellery was pawned for RM5,800. Police have seized the items. He also said a 33-year-old mother from Kelubi Damai here lodged a police report against her neighbour for stealing her jewellery worth RM30,000 on Nov 18.

He said the suspect, 44, was looking after the victim’s baby when she stole the valuables.
