SheFights seeks to empower women and children against violence

KUALA LUMPUR:

Aware of the potential threats facing women and children in this day and age, five friends decided to provide basic lessons on the art of self-defence.

Through “SheFights”, formed early this year, the group holds seminars on self-defence, which also include theory and practical training classes for children and women.

The seminars are held at universities with help from the corporate sector.

SheFights founder Faeznur Farok, 26, or “Benny”, said it was time for women and children to be taught the skills so that they could protect themselves from danger.

“Lately, we read reports that were scary, like abduction and rape. So, this skill is important for them. We also teach children as young as three years old,” she said at the “Stop Abuse For Everyone, For A Safer and Fearless Environment” (Safe) at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

The campaign, aimed at enhancing public awareness on child abuse, was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

SheFights co-founder Zulhanizam Asri, 25, said through the art of self-defence, women and children were taught to protect themselves without relying on brute force.

“We teach them to poke the eyes, hit hard at the neck or heart, or to step on feet if attacked from behind, while children are told to shout and hold on to an attacker's legs,” he said.

SheFights’ five trainers teach basic knowledge on varius self-defence techniques, such as boxing and Muay Thai.
