Businessman charged with cellular signal disruption with illicit phone
GEORGE TOWN: A businessman claimed trial to two counts of radio frequency jamming and three counts of using uncertified communications equipment.
Abdul Jabbar Mohamad Sulaiman (pic), 57, is charged with two counts of using a nonstandard cordless phone to disrupt radio frequencies at a house in Tanjung Tokong at noon on Feb 24 last year.
The offences under Section 238(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) carry a maximum RM50,000 fine or imprisonment of up to one year or both, upon conviction.
Abdul Jabbar also claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to three counts of using communications equipment – a caller ID converter and two cordless phones – uncertified under the Communications and Multimedia Regulations (Technique Standards) 2000, at the same place, time and date.
The charges are framed under Regulation 16(1)(b) of the Communications and Multimedia Regulations (Technique Standards) 2000, read with Regulation 16(3) of the same Regulations, and punishable under Regulation 37 of the same Regulations.
Judge Norsalha Hamzah fixed Jan 16 for mention.
Abdul Jabbar faces a maximum RM100,000 fine or up to six months’ imprisonment or both, on each charge if found guilty.
He was represented by lawyer S. Raveentharan while Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission department director Mohd Sophian Zakaria prosecuted.
