Floods an eye-opener and reminder for us

- MUHAMAD SOLAHUDIN RAMLI Marang, Terengganu

THE monsoon season is here again, and that means umbrellas, raincoats and jackets return to the list of basic necessities, while the weather forecast becomes everyone’s interest.

The severity of this annual phenomenon may be different each year. Thus it is important for everyone, especially those living in flood-prone areas, to be ready for any possibilities.

Water is not always something fun to play with. For many years, cases of people drowning after being washed away by floodwaters have been reported.

We may not have been the previous victims’ family members, next of kin or acquaintances, but it does not mean that we should be less prepared.

Instead, we should be forewarned and learn from the tragedies because ignorance is not bliss all the time.

Anything can happen anytime to anyone. Therefore, it is best if we take precautionary steps before it is too late.

Children, the elderly and differently abled people may need extra help and constant reminders regarding the danger of floodwaters.

While we are advised to stay indoors during this wet season, many of us need to leave for work, appointments or during emergencies.

In this case, it is important that we keep ourselves informed about the latest updates of the flood situation by obtaining information from reliable sources, so that we will not be stuck travelling the wrong way.

We need to manage our time wisely and start our journey early as there may be traffic congestion, especially when badly affected roads are shut for vehicles.

Even when we run late for work, we should stay patient, especially when dealing with the sluggish traffic. On rainy days, it is never safe to speed, even when traffic is clear.

The slippery road may cause hydroplaning and it can be more dangerous if motorists lose focus when behind the wheel. Not only will reckless and careless drivers risk the lives of the ones travelling with them in their vehicle, but they also may harm other road users.

Smartphones and gadgets are common distractions that may cause road accidents and lead to deaths and property damage.

It was recently reported that there is an increasing number of flood victims in flood relief shelters. This is the time we should lend them a helping hand.

Charity begins at home, and Malaysia is our home. We too may need them to help us in the future when we deal with our travails. This noble act shows our empathy, amity and unity.

We may feel unhappy as bad weather affects our moods and plans, but it is just a reminder that life is not always about sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, there will be storms that will make us feel scared and worried. These feelings will eventually help us to think, reflect and be grateful.

Natural disasters are not punishments. They are eye-openers.

It was recently reported that there is an increasing number of victims in flood relief centre. This is the time we should lend them a helping hand.
