MACC probes alleged corruption and abuse of power

IPOH: Cash in various denominations amounting to about RM1mil was found inside a metal box belonging to a former senior policeman in Taiping.

Besides money, anti-graft officers also seized an assortment of jewellery from the house of the 59-year-old former OCPD.

The raid came after the officer, with the rank of Assistant Commissioner, was arrested on Thursday evening for suspicion of corruption and abuse of power.

Also detained were his wife, aged 54, and a 34-year-old woman.

All three were held after giving their statements to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to sources, the suspect is said to have received RM70,000 from a businesswoman for his daughter’s wedding.

It is learnt that the money was deposited in RM20,000 and RM50,000 tranches into the bank account of a family member in February.

Yesterday, all three suspects, clad in orange attire, were remanded for five days.

MACC director of investigations Datuk Simi Abdul Ghani said the suspects would be investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

On Aug 29, former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar received an open letter, accusing the former OCPD of receiving bribes from illegal gambling syndicates and operating a vice den.

An investigation was carried out by MACC shortly after the allegations went viral.

Last month, the officer was transferred to the Perak police contingent but it was unrelated to the case.

In Kota Kinabalu, two police personnel, who asked for RM5,000 from a couple arrested for committing close proximity, have been remanded for six days by MACC.

The lance corporal and corporal, both 39, are said to have received RM1,000 from the couple during the incident last Sunday.

A report was lodged before anti-graft officers arrested the two suspects at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on Thursday.
