Bowler strikes home en route to the second round

PETALING JAYA: National bowler Timmy Tan struck his fourth perfect game of the year to march into the last 60 of the Korea PBA Storm Cup in style.

The 23-year-old made 12 consecutiv­e strikes in the opening game of yesterday’s second block en route to amassing 1,390 pinfalls to remain top of Squad A with a 12-game total of 2,875 at the Anyang Hogye Gymnasium in Gyeonggi. It was Timmy’s 13th perfect game.

Only the top 15 from the four 60-player squads get to play in the second round. Youngster Rafiq Ismail and veteran Shalin Zulkifli also made the cut.

Rafiq also qualified from Squad A after retaining his sixth spot with a 2,652 total, while Shalin advanced from Squad B by finishing second with 2,814 pinfalls.

Recently-crowned Asian No. 1 Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman’s challenge ended early after she could only manage a 2,493 total for 25th place in Squad A.

Sin Li Jane should have no problem qualifying from Squad C (which took place late yesterday), having topped the halfway stage with 1,405 pinfalls.

All the 60 qualifiers will roll another six games today before the field is cut to 32 for the eliminatio­n match-play. The top four will then advance to the stepladder finals.

The mixed-field championsh­ips, featuring 240 bowlers, boasts a lucrative prize money of 100mil won (RM376,000).

The champion will receive 30mil won (RM113,000).
