Countries move to stop online child pornography

-

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian police are working closely with their counterparts in Australia and Britain to put an end to online child pornography, says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

He said the cooperation involved learning new methods to identify those uploading and downloading child pornography online.

“We know that these paedophiles use a website known as ‘Tor’, where it manages to hide the IP addresses of those downloading or uploading files.

“The three countries will look at all the new methods and channels used by these people to spread child pornographic materials online,” Nur Jazlan said after launching the state-level 33rd pasar tani anniversary at Perling Mall here yesterday.

He warned that those having such materials are committing a serious offence.

“The police can track paedophiles through their IP addresses that they use to watch such materials on the Internet.

“No matter who or where they are or how long it takes to track them, the police will do whatever it takes to put such people behind bars,” he added.

It was reported that Malaysia has the highest number of IP addresses which upload and download photographs and visuals of child pornography in South-East Asia, the authorities have said.

The number of children falling prey to perpetrators whom they befriended online is also reportedly increasing fast.

Many Malaysian parents let their children use handphones without monitoring them, and more than 60% of children spend time in online chatrooms on the Internet on a daily basis.
