MACC arrests two more Sabah railway engineers

-

KOTA KINABALU: Two more state government engineers with the Sabah Railway Department have been arrested, bringing to seven the number of people detained in a graft probe on suspected fictitious projects and claims.

The two, aged 36 and 38, were picked up from the department’s head office in Tanjung Aru at 9pm on Tuesday.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) obtained a fiveday remand order on the two from a magistrate yesterday.

It is believed that MACC investigators are looking at possible abuse of power and corruption in the awarding of fake maintenance and emergency contracts between 2012 and last year.

The others arrested are the department’s chief engineer, two engineers and two contractors.

The 58-year-old chief engineer, who is the department’s deputy director, as well as two other engineers aged 37 and 39, and a 42-yearold contractor, were released after a 10-day remand ended yesterday.

The same magistrate’s court allowed the contractor to be released on a RM100,000 bail with RM20,000 deposited; the deputy director, with a bail of RM100,000, undeposited; and the two engineers, on a RM50,000 bail each in two sureties.

Another 60-year-old contractor, who was arrested on Saturday, remains under remand.
