Sarawak highway contractors told to buck up

-

KUCHING: Contractors involved in the Sarawak portion of the PanBorneo Highway project must improve traffic management and safety at their construction sites, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He told the contractors to buck up following several road accidents.

The contractors were told to improve the road condition at their construction sites such as repairing structural flaws and patching up potholes.

“They must ensure the speed limit and warning signs are clearly visible.

“The ministry will not hesitate to appoint an independent party to monitor traffic safety along the PanBorneo Highway project if standards are not up to mark. The consultant cost will be deducted from their project package,” Fadillah told reporters after chairing a meeting with stakeholders here yesterday.

He said a check with the police and Road Transport Department revealed that most accident cases were caused by human error such as driving above the speed limit.

He advised motorists to slow down when passing through the construction zones.

The public can lodge complaints about bad roads or traffic management on the Pan-Borneo Highway Facebook page.

The ministry has set a two-hour response time for every report.
