Village glowing with 1,600 illuminated red lanterns
ALOR SETAR: The quiet and peaceful Kampung Baru Padang Lembu in Gurun, Kedah, is now aglow with 1,600 illuminated red lanterns, hanging along several streets.
Visitors to the village are set to be captivated by the festive decoration, stretching across street poles for almost 1.5km, as they enter through the main road.
Its village security and development committee chairman Huan Keng Chow, who is also Jerai MCA division chief, said the lanterns would be turned on at night for 15 days before and after Chinese New Year.
“The lanterns were acquired via donations from villagers and the public.
“With the Chinese New Year approaching, we hope to liven up the festive mood for the more than 4,000 villagers,” he said yesterday.
MCA vicepresident Datuk Lee Chee Leong, who is also Kedah MCA chairman, launched the lighting up of the lanterns.
Lee said after the ceremony that the village would continue to be lit with LED lamps, which were recently installed there.
“Padang Lembu is Kedah’s largest Chinese new village.
“We will brighten up the entire surroundings,” he said in his speech before announcing a RM10,000 allocation for the village to organise Chinese New Year programmes.
Also present was Gurun MCA coordinator Datuk Boey Chin Gan.
