JOHOR BARU: The Chinese New Year snack kuih kapit or “love letters”, may have evolved to include the pandan flavour as well as black and white sesame seeds, but the original variety remains the most loved, according to some sellers here.

Lim Teck Ching said despite the variety of flavours in the market now, many still prefer the original recipe.

“Black and white sesame seeds may be added to give the snack a twist but the taste may not be agreeable to all,” said the 61yearold fruit stall owner who sells festive cookies for extra income.

“These cookies are homemade by experienced bakers,” he added.

Over 50 types of cookies and snacks, priced between RM10 and RM25 per container, are being offered at Lim’s stall in Jalan Badik 1 here.

“I have been selling festive cookies for over 30 years now.

“The usual top sellers are the original kuih kapit, ngaku (arrowhead) chips and pineapple tarts,” he said.

The early customers are mostly Singaporean but Lim expects to see more local buyers as the celebration approaches.

Another cookie seller, Sally Chua, 55, also found that the original kuih kapit is the popular choice among customers.

The younger generation, however, is more game to try those with peanut butter and chocolate spread.

“The peanut butter and chocolate kapit have been selling well as children love them,” she said, adding that her Chinese New Year snacks cost between RM25 and RM35 per container.
