KOTA KINABALU: A man who was seen in a viral video jumping on top of a car at a roundabout in Likas here is a drug addict with a criminal record.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm M. Chandra said that the 36-year-old man is under police custody after passers-by overpowered him shortly after he jumped on the roof of a car. The man tested positive for syabu, he said.

ACP Chandra said the suspect was a security guard from Kg Bakiau, Keningau, who also served a one-year jail term at the Simpang Renggam detention centre in Johor in 1999 for drug offences.

He is also suspected to be involved in car thefts and break-ins with another accomplice who remains at large.

The viral video was accompanied by a message that said that the man had also tried to force his way into a car at the Jalan Pasir roundabout near Likas Plaza here.

The incident occurred at about 5.30pm on Sunday.

ACP Chandra said that the suspect was high on drugs when he came out of a car driven by his friend to confront a motorist who had stopped at the roundabout due to traffic.

Unable to get into the locked car, he said, the suspect climbed on top of the vehicle.

ACP Chandra said that earlier on the same day, the suspect and his friend had stolen a vehicle parked along the road in Karamunsing here.

Police also seized a car key, two house keys and a black sling bag from the suspect.
