Malaysia get Thomas Cup boost based on world ranking

-

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia are as good as assured of a place in the Thomas Cup Finals in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 20-27 based on the team’s world ranking.

But Badminton Association of Malaysia ( BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria wants the men’s side to qualify on merit.

“Our men’s team have moved up in the world ranking and should qualify for the Finals based on the overall team ranking,” said Norza.

“But I don’t want them to qualify via the back door. I want them to qualify on merit and that is by finishing as the top four Asian teams at the upcoming qualifiers.”

Malaysia, ranked seven, will be taking part in the Asia Team Badminton Championships in Alor Setar, Kedah, from Feb 6-11.

Only the top four nations at the Asian meet will be automatic entries for the Finals.

The Finals in Bangkok will feature 16 countries – four semi-finalists at the Asian qualifiers, four semi- finalists at the European qualifiers, one each from the Oceania, African and PanAmerican qualifiers, defending champions, host and three teams with the highest total world team ranking on March 1.

“As of January, we’re in a good ranking position as a team. In fact, we’re ranked higher than South Korea. We’re sure to go to the Finals but I want the team to earn their place at the qualifiers,” said Norza.

“But it’s tough for the women to qualify. They have to finish in the top four at the Asian qualifiers to guarantee a place or else, they’ll be out of contention.
