BARCELONA: Malaysians will be able to get hold of Samsung’s flagship smartphones at the same time as the rest of the world.

Samsung Malaysia Electronics president Yoonsoo Kim confirmed that Malaysia would get the nextgen handsets on March 16, the same time they are released globally.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ are Samsung’s first smartphones to feature a main 12-megapixel camera with dual apertures (f/1.5 and f/2.4). Similar to the way the iris of a human eye expands and contracts, it lets in more light when it’s dark and less light when it’s too bright for sharper, clearer photos.

“Nothing is more important than the images we share now, not the text we send or posts we upload,” said DJ Koh, president and head of IT & mobile communications division, Samsung Electronics, at the keynote at the Fira Barcelona exhibition centre.

“With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we

have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do they enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, the smartphones are designed to help them connect with others and express themselves in a way that’s unique and personal to them.”

The camera can also capture videos in super slow motion at 960fps (frames per second) for recording moments that pass too quickly to be seen by the naked eye.

The S9+ also comes with an additional 12-megapixel camera on the back with telephoto lens that offers 2x optical and up to 10x digital zooming capabilities.

Both models have a front-facing 8-megapixel camera and an Infinity Display that stretches all the way to the sides with the S9 having a 5.8in screen and the S9+ a 6.2in.

Samsung also lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them with AR Emoji. By analys- ing an image of the user, it can map out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that imitates the user’s expressions like winks and nods.

Those who pre-order the smartphones from March 1 to 4 will get a Harmon Kardon Onyx Mini portable Bluetooth speaker worth RM699.

The Galaxy S9 64GB will cost RM3,299 while the S9+ will come in several capacities – 64GB (RM3,799), 128GB (RM3,999) and (RM4,399).

Both models will be available in three colours, namely Midnight Black, Coral Blue and the new Lilac Purple except for the Galaxy S9+ 256GB which will only be available in Midnight Black. 256GB
