DAP rep heads to ‘key battleground’

Damansara Utama’s Yeo to contest in Johor

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin (pic) has been shipped out of the Damansara Utama state seat to contest in a parliamentary seat Johor this general election.

Announcing that she was “moving out of her comfort zone” during the launch of her book Reimagining Malaysia on Facebook Live, Yeo said she had accepted the party’s decision.

“It was not an easy decision but for personal reasons, I want to stay in the Klang Valley. However, Johor is the key battleground,” said a teary-eyed Yeo during the event at The Starling Mall on Wednesday. Also present was DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang. Yeo, who is from Segamat, did not mention where she would be contesting, but there is talk that she will stand in Bakri.

She will be joining other DAP MPs in Johor, which Pakatan Harapan has earmarked as a key battleground.

Kluang MP and Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong is expected to go up against MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong in Ayer Hitam, while Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching is said to be making a bid in Yong Peng, a state seat.

Yeo, a first-time assemblyman, said she was leaving her constituency to champion bigger issues such as human rights, clean governance, social economy and justice.

“I want to be able to say yes to things that will make a difference,” she said, adding that she wanted to make herself available to things that would change lives for the future generations.

“I believe that can only be done by me moving out of my comfort zone to Johor,” said Yeo.
