Yee Xian strikes the right balance after scoring 10 As in SPM exams

PETALING JAYA: With the right balance, sports and studies can be a winning combination.

This is proven by national squash player Siow Yee Xian as he stood out after scoring 10 straight As in his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

The 17-year-old, who joined the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) last year, has also done well in squash. He is the national junior champion in his age-group and also bagged the Asian Junior Championships Under-17 title last year.

“I’m very happy and definitely proud to achieve straight As in my SPM,” said the bespectacled Yee Xian.

“I didn’t really expect it because I only reduced my training time prior to the exams instead of taking a complete break.

“But, I’m definitely pleased that I can do well in both studies and squash.”

Yee Xian, who has also enrolled for his A-Level studies, will not sideline squash in favour of studies.

Next up for the world No. 350 is the Asian Team Championships in Cheongju, South Korea, from March 21-25.

Yee Xian will make his debut for the senior team alongside Mohd Addeen Idrakie, Darren Rahul Pragasam and Ong Sai Hung.

“My goal is to make the top 50 rankings one day ... hopefully soon,” said Yee Xian.

“I’m really excited to represent the country at the Asian Team. It’s my first time at senior level and I’m hoping to do well and win some matches if chosen to play.”

Besides Yee Xian, the other national squash players who received their SPM results were Lai Wen Li, Ooi Kah Yan and Chan Yiwen.

Sabahan Wen Li had 5As while Kah Yan and Yiwen both had 4As.

Other BJSS students who also fared well in their SPM were Mohd Zakariya Minsuri (athletics) and Muhd Syukri Zulkifli (shooting), who both had 7As.

Nur Syazwi Aliah Anuar (shooting), Low Ying Ling (athletics) and Ng Wan Win (badminton) all had 6As.
