BENTONG: Bentong town may have a mini stadium in the future, its MP Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

Liow, who is also the Transport Minister, said he would put in a formal request to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

“We have made Bentong an ecotourism and agrotourism destination. Now, we want to promote sports tourism,” he said.

He was speaking at the Fit Malaysia event at Dataran Bentong yesterday, which was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

Fit Malaysia is an initiative by the Youth and Sports Ministry to promote a healthy lifestyle among Malaysians and to transform the country from a sports-loving nation to a sporting nation.

Currently on a nationwide tour, the event yesterday featured Zumba, aerobics, archery, cycling and running, among others.

Liow said sports tourism was in line with the effort to make Bentong a satellite town of Greater Kuala Lumpur.

He said the Bentong people were supportive of the Youth and Sports Ministry’s mission.

“We have to make sports part of our culture and lifestyle in our country, and we have to take care of our health together,” he said.

Khairy said he supported Liow’s suggestion to build a mini stadium in Bentong.

“I will bring the request to the Economic Planning Unit,” he said, while congratulating Liow for having the vision to make Bentong an ecotourism and sports tourism destination.

He added that the proposal would hopefully be incorporated in Malaysia’s next development plan.

On the general election, Liow reminded MCA members to prioritise the party’s interests instead of getting upset over the choice of candidates.

“We should not be selfish. Party interests come first. When it comes to selection of candidates, the party leadership has to think of how to win more seats.

“We have to think about how to become a good representative to help the party and to help the nation, rather than squabbling over seats,” he said.
