LENDING a helping hand to those less fortunate in society, the Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur (Host) organised a fund-raiser where 120 golfers teed off and had some RM80,000 tipped into its coffers at the end of the day.

Dubbed the Charity Friendship Tournament, the event was held at the Tropicana Golf & Country Resort in Petaling Jaya and saw some of the proceeds donated to three charitable organisations, including the KL Lions Renal Centre in Batu Complex, Kuala Lumpur, which received RM10,000 each.

President of the organising club Datuk Chiong Chee Kin said the event was held in conjunction with the club’s Founders Day and added: “Hopefully, the tournament will be used as a stepping stone for us to organise more fund-raising events in the future.

“The club also raised more funds through a raffle draw that coincided with our 59th anniversary dinner.”

Ronnie Toh, one of the participants, said he was all game for taking part in charity golf events.

“Not only am I contributing towards a worthy cause, but I am also getting a workout through the golf game,” said Toh, a 45-year-old businessman.

Among the main sponsors of the Charity Friendship Tournament were Aeon, LBS, MGB and EKTech.

Melvin Jones of Arizona founded the first Lions Club in the United States in 1917.
