Embracing stress positively

-

A GROUP of final year students have organised a one-day stress management event called Dear Stress.

Carried out in partnership with the Malaysian Mental Health Association, the event emphasised on educating undergraduate students to develop a positive perception toward stress.

The students are taking the Bachelor of Corporate Communication from the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (UTAR) Faculty of Creative Industries.

Three speakers were invited to speak on stress-related topics.

The speakers were Datin Dr Ang Kim Teng from the Malaysian Mental Health Association, Kristine Ng from the IOI Properties Group and Soh Yi Wern from Brickfields Asia College.

They spoke on the various approaches of coping with stress, awareness about subsequent stress-induced mental health issues that could occur as well as sharing about battling depression.

There were also other activities and games that gave students a form of temporary escape to release stress. The organising committee and the event’s sponsors donated a sum of RM2,000 to the Malaysian Mental Health Association in support of its work.

During his speech at the event, Faculty of Creative Industries dean Dr David Tneh Cheng Eng shed some light on the importance of addressing stress as many undergraduate students face difficulties in doing so.

It is crucial that they learn how to cope with stress in a proper way.

“I personally feel that stress is an important issue to be addressed because it is relevant to all of us especially university students who experience constant pressure from their studies.” said Dr Tneh.

A former medical doctor and public health specialist with the Health Ministry, Dr Ang gave some insight on the importance of having a positive mental well-being.

“Depression is very common but many people tend to hide it.

“Most importantly, we must recognise and acknowledge it and seek help.” she said.

A special yoga breathing tech- nique session was conducted by yoga instructor Ee Lee, with the aim of teaching students to develop a positive mind-set through specific breathing methods.

Several artists such as Thomas & Jack, singer Daniel CheZi, and hip hop group, ManHand performed in support of the event.
