Nurul Izzah wins suit

Ex-IGP Khalid and Ismail Sabri ordered to pay RM1mil in damages

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has been awarded RM1mil in damages by a High Court here in her suit against former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Nurul Izzah sued Khalid and Ismail Sabri three years ago for implying that she had committed treason after a photograph of her with Jacel Kiram, the daughter of Jamalulail Kiram who is said to have led the intrusion into Sabah in 2013, was published.

Judicial Commissioner Faizah Jamaludin ordered Khalid to pay RM400,000 in damages and Ismail Sabri, RM600,000.

JC Faizah also ordered Khalid and Ismail Sabri to pay a total of RM80,000 in costs.

She allowed Nurul Izzah’s claims after she found the defendants liable for making the defamatory statements against Nurul Izzah at two press conferences.

“In an ordinary meaning, the defendants had defamed Nurul Izzah as they did not check with her before making the statements,” she said.

She ruled that any person who

heard Khalid’s statement made at an event in the Bukit Aman police headquarters here and Ismail Sabri’s at an event in Bera, Pahang, would think that Nurul Izzah had met the enemy of the country who had killed members of Malaysian armed forces and police.

She also said that Khalid and

Ismail Sabri failed to distinguish between the comments and the facts in their defence arguments.
