MELAKA: All political parties contesting in Melaka were reminded to abide by the law when putting up their campaigning materials.

State police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said all posters, flags and banners must be installed only at the appropriate places.

He said such materials should be fixed without obstructing any road signs and traffic lights along all roads in the state.

“The police and local authorities will lower all flags, banners and posters that can disrupt traffic and endanger road users,” he told reporters at the state police headquarters in Bukit Beruang here yesterday.

He urged all parties to work closely with the police to ensure voters’ safety.

DCP Abdul Jalil said the police have also identified nine hotspots across the state and individuals expected to court trouble during the nomination and voting period.

He said voters should not be worried about exercising their right during polling day on May 9.

On a separate matter, DCP Abdul Jalil said the police have crippled two motorcycle theft groups in the state following the arrest of 10 suspects between March 12 and April 9.

He said eight of the suspects, including a woman, were members of the Firdaus Bachang group while the remaining two were from the Ah Seng Paya Mengkuang gang.

“Police recovered 14 motorcycles, six motorcycle frames and a motorcycle engine with the arrest of the suspects aged 24 to 32.

“We believe we have managed to solve 35 cases of motorcycle thefts reported in Melaka and Kedah, as well as a house break-in here,” he added.
