Nurul Islam: I am not a Bangladeshi

- By ASHLEY TANG newsdesk@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: PAS’ Ampang candidate Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff says he continues to be victimised by fake news being spread in cyberspace claiming that he is a Bangladeshi, despite clarifying that he was born and bred in Malaysia.

“Some of them (cybertroopers) are still targeting me with the same issue. When they post anything on Facebook, they tag me and keep on sending the same message,” he said yesterday.

Messages claiming that Nurul Islam is a Bangladeshi and not a Malaysian have been circulating on social media sites, and on WhatsApp messaging app.

The PAS Youth election director however said he would not make a police report, and “will forgive those who spread the fake news”.

He said although he would not press charges, this was not the political culture in Malaysia.

“It is totally wrong. You cannot judge others on their skin colour or background because in this country we have Indians who look like Malay, and we also have Indian Muslims.

“We have people of many other races and nationalities who contribute a lot to this country,” he said.

Nurul Islam said he was unperturbed by the fake news aimed at tarnishing his reputation in the Ampang parliamentary constituency.

“No, I don’t think so because people in Ampang are educated. They are not racist.

“In fact, I received a lot of support from voters who encouraged me to keep on fighting,” he said.

On Monday, Nurul Islam clarified that he was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1983. He studied at SMK La Salle Sentul and went on to do his Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering at International Islamic University Malaysia.

He is married with four children and is fluent in three languages – Malay, English and Tamil.

Nurul Islam said he started his political career in PAS in the Batu Youth division.

He was later appointed Federal Territory Youth secretary and climbed the ranks in PAS when he was promoted to Federal Territory Youth chief. He went on to the national youth level where he was appointed head of the new bureau.
