Time to enact anti-litter law to wipe out litterbugs

NOW that we have a sparkling new government, how about keeping the environment squeaky clean as well?

I earnestly think this can be achieved if we have an anti-litter law. It doesn’t have to be punitive and could just be used for educational purposes.

Time and again when we hear about flash floods, we are quick to point fingers at the usual suspects, such as municipal workers not cleaning the drains properly. How about pointing fingers at ourselves? It is our nonchalant attitude towards the environment that leads to blocked drains and ultimately flash floods.

It is not uncommon to see people throwing rubbish out of their cars as if it’s their birthright.

If you walk around, you will see empty water bottles, cans, plastic bags, cigarette butts and other rubbish strewn everywhere.

Over the years, the problem of littering has only gotten worse. What happened to our civic consciousness? How can we think of achieving developed nation status if we can’t even keep our environment clean?

I believe that if everyone were to do their bit to stop littering, our streets would be cleaner and drains would be free from blockages.

The anti-litter law can be thrown at those who persist in littering. The money collected from fines can be put to good use. It’s common sense that the less rubbish we generate, the less we need to spend on cleaning.
