KUALA LUMPUR: The impasse over the appointment of the new Attorney General (AG) will not be prolonged, said Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said an amicable solution would be achieved based on the wisdom of the government led by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the Palace.

“I don’t think it will drag on. “There is a problem but nothing that can’t be overcome.

“It will not be a long, drawn-out crisis,” he said in a press conference after his working visit to Bukit Aman yesterday.

“The Council of Malay Rulers is scheduled to meet (today) and they might come up with ways to assist in settling the matter,” Muhyiddin said.

The Cabinet, according to Muhyiddin, is fully behind Dr Mahathir because the AG’s appointment is an important step towards ensuring the rule of law.

Muhyiddin, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president, said the Pakatan Harapan leadership wants to see this conundrum end and solved through cooperation from all parties concerned.

The Government has nominated lawyer Tommy Thomas for Attorney General, but Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V reportedly has reservations about the choice because Thomas is not a Malay-Muslim.

However, Dr Mahathir said the Government is handling the matter based on the law and Federal Constitution, while the King acts on the advice from the Government.
