GEORGE TOWN:

About 50 people of all faiths joined a buka puasa event in a show of unity here.

The get-together, called “Puasa4Malaysia”, was organised by Malaysians for Malaysia Penang on Friday to promote friendship and understanding as well as to celebrate unity in diversity.

The participants first gathered at Armenian Park and were treated to a short free-flow dance led by choreographer Aida Redza.

They then made their way to the buka puasa venue at Kapitan Restaurant in Chulia Street.

Malaysians for Malaysia Penang representative Jenny Liew said this was the fifth year that the group organised the Puasa4Malaysia initiative.

“It’s really good to see so many people coming to this event. This is our biggest attendance ever.

“We must treasure this camaraderie and nurture it. It should be a normal occurrence to see Malaysians from all faiths and background sharing a meal together.

“We want to write a new narrative for our beloved nation because the old is gone and the new has arrived,” she added.

Seri Delima assemblyman Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who was present, shared photographs of the event on her Facebook account.

“Turnout was larger than expected. We saw lots of familiar faces and for those whom we met for the first time – well, we’re now friends.

“A great start to our Malaysia Baru!” Syerleena wrote on Facebook.

Also present was Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s wife Tan Lean Kee.
