Learning languages

- MOHAMED MOKHTAR AHMAD BAJUNID Seremban

SO much has been said about learning new languages. As Italian film director Federico Fellini said: “A different language is a different vision of life” while a psycholinguist Frank Smith made it clearer on the importance of learning foreign languages when he said: “One language sets you a corridor of life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

It should be mentioned that proficiency in our own mother tongue is not enough. We need to learn other foreign languages.

Studying a language is a multi-faceted learning experience which enriches us in many ways. The benefits are elaborated as follows:

Our listening skills and memory will definitely be enhanced. It has often been said that although learning a language is complex, speaking or learning a foreign language will give your brain a good workout.

We will have more confidence and more options will open up for us.

English language has become a universal language in international relations and foreign trade globally. Similarly, other languages like Mandarin, French, Spanish and Italian have become significant in international communication.

One’s view of the world changes for the better. Instead of mistrust and fear, one will be more tolerant and understanding of the cultural heritage of others. We will be more appreciative of cultural diversity.

Learning a language will also facilitate exchange of information through bilateral relations, international forums, seminars, exchange programmes, conferences and other international programmes.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that these measures would turn Malaysians into a role player in global economy, politics and international relations in future.
