IT’S only the middle of the year but students can start working towards an exciting break for the year-end holidays.

Why travel out of the country when holidaymakers around the world flock to Malaysia for idyllic getaways and world-class entertainment?

Up in the highlands of Resorts World Genting, the famed city of entertainment is always evolving to present new and exciting ways for the ideal escapade.

A three-day, two-night all-expenses-paid trip, sponsored by Resorts World Genting, await two runner-up teams for this year’s Newspaper-in-Education (NiE) contest, Star Flicks.

In this movie poster contest organised by Star Media Group Berhad, each team comprising four students and the supervising teacher will join in on the fun lined up on the hill top resort.

With numerous refurbishments and additions to the resort, Resorts World Genting has plenty in store for the prizewinners.

At 1,828 m (6,000 ft), lifestyle mall SkyAvenue takes high street to new heights. Made for eating, playing and shopping, the complex is a vibrant hub of activity with over 100 retail options.

At certain times of the day, its expansive atrium transforms into a realm of spectacular visual storytelling. One-thousand-and-one glowing winch balls suspended from a four-storey high ceiling, in combination with a giant wraparound LED screen, presents a free-for-all audio, visual and motion graphics performance to the public that is immersive and dynamic.

The largest permanent winch installation in Asia, SkySymphony weaves spellbinding stories with larger-than-life cinematic visuals and an original music mix.

SkyAvenue offers a diverse array of food to suit anyone’s palate. Coffee lovers need not go all the way to France to savour authentic French coffee. One can just visit SkyAvenue’s Cafés Richard. Decked in a classy Parisian-style atmosphere, customers can experience and appreciate the genuine French art of living and enjoy espressos, original coffees and teas, as well as French food and pastries.

Often called the No.1 coffee roaster in France, the Cafés Richard brand is now responsible for more than 2.4 million cups of coffee served daily in cafés, bistros, and restaurants around the world.

More excitement is brewed on Level Four of SkyAvenue with star attractions: Zombie Outbreak, Jurassic Research Centre and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Odditorium.

Zombies have always held much fascination. These brain-devouring reanimated corpses have shuffled their way into popular culture, inciting fear and horror through films and television series.

Now, you can experience the zombie apocalypse for yourself at the Zombie Outbreak! Feel the thrill as you are hunted by the walking dead. Seek shelter and see if you can survive this course which takes place in an abandoned house that spreads out like a maze.

Turn the clock back to prehistoric times at the Jurassic Research Centre. This is the second research centre after the one in Penang.

With massive models of different dinosaur species throughout the centre, those who love dinosaurs will certainly be impressed. Read about these dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. There is also a fossil laboratory where one can study the different specimen dinosaur fossils with detailed inscriptions.

Don’t be startled when a Tyrannosaurus Rex roars as you walk past or when one of the dinosaurs rears its head to look at you. The centre is designed to be informative and interactive. Do check out the 4D experience of witnessing velociraptors wreaking havoc in a discovery lab.

The Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Odditorium showcases all things bizarre and extraordinary. Stare and gawk at the spectacular collection of over 400 exhibits.

The collection includes the model of a Vampire Woman, Mike the Headless Chicken, and a model of David Beckham’s legs made out of worn-out bills. Those in need of some luck can visit the lucky room where they will find a collection of lucky charms from different tribes from all four corners of the world.

Other than these novelties, SnowWorld is a winter wonderland escape that is loved by all. The environment here is modelled after a world heritage concept. Stroll past an English tea shop, French bakeryand Italian pizzeria while taking beautiful pictures with loved ones.

Not used to the cold? Take shelter at the Warm House before continuing your journey. Those who are more adventurous can experience the thrill of playing in the snow with the Play Slide and Crest Run Toboggan Slide.

After a full day of excitement and adventure, one needs a comfortable oasis to recharge for the next day. The runners-up will stay at the Theme Park Hotel, located at the doorsteps of the Arena of Stars and the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox World Malaysia.

Formerly known as Hotel on the Park, Theme Park Hotel has fun and quirky décor throughout the 448 rooms of this boutique hotel. The designs are bound to put a smile on your face.

Does this sound like an ideal holiday for you and your friends? If so, send in your entries for the Star Flicks contest.

Be quick as the contest closes on July 4.
