Calling all UM alumni

-

ASK not what Universiti Malaya (UM) can do for you, but what you can do for your alma mater.

Calling on graduates to join the Persatuan Alumni Universiti Malaya (PAUM), association president Datuk Noordin Razak said they should be proud of the country’s oldest university and its contributions to the nation.

“Some 200,000 students have graduated from UM, but there are only 200 active members in PAUM.

“We want to see more fresh graduates joining the alumni in the months to come. Hopefully, we can get at least 2,000 new members,” he said.

Established in 1989, PAUM is conducting a recruitment drive for new members, said its honorary secretary Ellen Loh.

Membership is also open to graduates of other universities and professional bodies.

“They won’t have voting rights like UM graduates but they can use all the facilities such as the gym, swimming pool, tennis and badminton courts, karaoke room, and pool table.

“Members will also get 10% off their dining bill at the cafe, and their spouse and children aged 18 and below, can use the facilities,” she said, adding that a banquet hall and seminar rooms are available for rent, and activities and sporting events are organised regularly.

The membership registration fee is RM1,000, but RM500 is a refundable deposit. Members also pay a monthly RM60 fee.

Loh said the fees would be used to cover the clubhouse’s operating costs and rental.

A dinner will be held on Aug 4 to mark the official opening of its new clubhouse at Jalan Susur Damansara (off Jalan Gegambir), Kuala Lumpur. PAUM used to operate from an old bungalow in UM.

The dinner, to be officiated by Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah and Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Zara Salim, is also to raise funds for underprivileged students, and to sustain the association’s activities.

Tickets are RM500 per pax. PAUM hopes to raise RM500,000 from the dinner.

“The last time we had a fund raising dinner was in 2011,” said Loh.

Noordin said invitations would be sent to PAUM’s first patron, PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and ministers who graduated from UM.

These include Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik, Primary Industries Minister Teresa Kok, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa, Rural Development Deputy Minister R. Sivarasa, Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye, and Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Steven Sim.

During the dinner, honorary memberships will be given to UM’s former vice-chancellors. For enquiries on membership, dinner tickets and rental of facilities, call 03-20931235/ 016-3282257. — By CHRISTINA CHIN
