PKR: No other contender for top post

So far, only Anwar is confirmed to be contesting, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: No one has come forward as yet to challenge Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the president’s post at PKR’s polls, says party secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said that so far, only Anwar had confirmed that he would be contesting the top post, which is currently held by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also Deputy Prime Minister.

Saifuddin was quoted by Bernama as saying that he would be meeting Anwar, who is also PKR leader, in Turkey today and would get him to sign the nomination forms.

Saifuddin was speaking to reporters after opening the Malaysian International Retail and Franchise Exhibition 2018 here yesterday.

Nominations are to be held from July 27-29 and voting over nine weeks from Aug 24 while the results will be announced in November.

Anwar was earlier reported to have said that he will contest for the post of PKR president as it is the promise he had made to Malaysians over 20 years ago.

In a statement, Anwar said he made the decision after receiving the support from Dr Wan Azizah, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and other party leaders.

Anwar is currently receiving treatment at a Turkish hospital for a spinal problem.

His daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar said Anwar will return to Malaysia as soon as he can after undergoing “reverse shoulder replacement surgery”.
