China affirms friendly ties with M’sia will be maintained

BEIJING has affirmed the friendship and cooperation between China and Malaysia will be maintained, as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad concluded his official visit to China.

The Prime Minister had announced the cancellation of China-backed mega projects, saying that the projects were not viable due to the country’s dire fiscal situation.

Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry’s spokesman Lu Kang said friendly consultation was the way forward in solving problems that arise during bilateral cooperation.

“Of course, cooperation between any two countries may encounter some problems, and different views may emerge at different times,” Lu said.

“These problems should be properly resolved through friendly consultations without losing sight of the friendship enjoyed by the two countries and the long-term development of bilateral ties,” he said at a press conference yesterday in response to Malaysia’s decision.

On Tuesday, Dr Mahathir said in Beijing that the East Coast Rail Link and two gas pipelines projects would be scrapped.

He said the Chinese leaders he met during his official visit from Aug 17 to 21 were understanding of Malaysia’s plight, as none of them had insisted that the projects be carried on.

On Tuesday, Lu told a press briefing that China was satisfied with the outcome of Dr Mahathir’s visit and viewed the trip as a successful one in enhancing the bilateral relations.

He said both nations would always hold friendly policies toward each other in whatever situation that may be, added that this long-term friendship would be maintained.

“China and Malaysia will continue to enhance political mutual trust and practical cooperation, and work for the sustained and steady development of our comprehensive strategic partnership,” he said.

Lu said Malaysia was an important country along the Maritime Silk Road and among the first to support China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

“The two countries will continue to expand trade volumes while enhancing cooperation in infrastructure, e-commerce and innovation,” he added.
