‘Hantu Kak Limah’ makes history at box office
PETALING JAYA: Hantu Kak Limah has made history by being the highest grossing Malaysian film by earning RM20.5mil in ticket collection in just 11 days.
The comedyhorror film produced by Infinitus Entertainment (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd and Astro Shaw is the fourth one set in the fictional village of Kampung Pisang and the third film in the Hantu Kak Limah trilogy.
Infinitus Entertainment managing director and Hantu Kak Limah executive producer TP Lim said the success took everyone by surprise.
“We’re quietly optimistic (about its success) but we were pleasantly surprised that the result was so phenomenal and came quickly as well.
“Just 11 days to break the record! So not only was the number big but the speed that it was reached (was surprising),” Lim said.
He said that while Infinitus Entertainment was an international company, founded by famous actor Andy Lau and Malaysian Datuk Seri Robin Tan, Hantu Kak Limah was a wholly Malaysian film.
“Hantu Kak Limah is very Malaysian – it takes place in a kampung (village) and you can find many elements in the kampung that is relatable to many Malaysians.
“The story also includes many Malaysian folklore. This film is as Malaysian as it gets.
“Our strategy is that, while we are international in terms of geography, we are also very mindful that we want to produce films which are for local markets as well,” he said, adding that was why Infinitus Entertainment chose to coproduce the film with Astro.
He said the company had also just finished filming a movie on mixedmartial arts starring famous Malay actors Remy Ishak and Zul Ariffin that he hoped would attract local audiences as much as Hantu Kak Limah.
“It will be very fun, actionpacked, and dramatic. And it is also a first, as Remy and Zul have never been in a film together before,” he said.
He added that the film was expected to be released in March next year.
He said those who have not watched Hantu Kak Limah should give it a go.
“It has a lot of interesting plot twists and the cinematography is beautiful,” he said.
