Maya Karin hopes to see Malaysians doing more for the environment
PETALING JAYA: As the country moves to embrace 61 years of independence, award-winning actress Maya Karin hopes to see more Malaysians walk the talk when it comes to good habits.
She said there is much to be proud of in Malaysia, from its celebration of its rich cultures to its incredible food.
“Malaysia is not perfect but it would be nice to see people openly show more pride and appreciation towards our country,” she added.
Maya also appreciates Malaysia’s rich flora and fauna.
Earlier this month, she posted on Instagram a picture of herself roughing it out deep in the jungles of Sabah, in knee-length leech socks.
Maya had joined a conservation project that was checking, replacing and installing camera traps in the Maliau Basin conservation area for ecological research.
“Malaysia has a lot to offer in terms of flora and fauna, we just have to take care of it,” she said, adding that the country is too relaxed when it comes to environmental conservation.
Maya’s interest in the environment stems back to when she first moved to Malaysia at the age of 17 and recalled seeing litter everywhere in the city.
“I remember thinking to myself – how can I do something about it? When I finally became a recognisable artiste, I realised that I could now do something,” she said.
When asked what ordinary Malaysians could do as a first step towards helping to care for our environment, she said people could start by first being more aware about the environment.
“Take an interest, read an article. Once we’re that much more aware, people can figure out for themselves what they can do,” said Maya.
She observed how there are so many campaigns launched to promote good habits, but after the hype dies down, everything slowly goes back to the way it was before.
Besides hoping that more people will walk the talk, Maya also urges Malaysians to show more love for their country and walk the walk – the #AnakAnakMalaysia 2018 walk, that is.
The registration fee for the #AnakAnakMalaysia 2018 walk is RM40 (Adult), RM20 (Child), RM100 (Family Package 2 Adults, 2 Children).
