Two cousins bow out of MCA after 30 years of service

KUALA LUMPUR: Two cousins are bowing out together in the MCA party elections after a political career spanning three decades.

Datuk Alex Chan Chin Chee, 61, lost his bid for the Gopeng MCA chairman post yesterday.

His cousin Datuk Albert Chang Chun Cheun, 66, who was the incumbent chairman, did not seek reelection.

Their fathers are twin brothers.

Ewe Sarn Yeun, 58, the new Gopeng MCA chairman, polled 178 votes against Chan’s 81.

Meanwhile, Liew Yee Lin, 46, beat Chen Kong Hoy for the Gopeng deputy chairman’s post. Liew has been with Gopeng MCA for 24 years, while Chen is an exvillage chief. Liew won 162 votes while Chen garnered 99. MCA has 191 divisions nationwide, 24 of which are in Perak.

Among the senior leaders and incumbents who returned unopposed in Perak were Datuk Lee Chee Leong (Kampar), Datuk Tan Chin Meng (Ipoh Barat) and Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha (Lumut).

In Johor, those who won unconteste­d included Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (Johor Baru), Ling Tian Soon (Ayer Hitam) and Gan Ping Sieu (Kluang).

Incumbent Tapah MCA division chief Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon retained his post, polling 155 votes against his opponent Liow Wen Yau, who received 44 votes.

In Bentong, Pahang, incumbent chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun fought off a strong challenge from MCA Youth secretaryg­eneral Datuk Leong Kim Soon.

Hoh polled 167 votes against Leong’s 145 votes in a close fight to retain the division.
