KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police have been put on alert after Thai police busted a local drug network which used social media to sell drugs.

The syndicate there is believed to have conducted its business similar to a pyramid scheme and had been selling the drugs to its members and the public there.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Kang Chez Chiang said his department was put on alert following the arrest of a couple at Samut Sakorn near Bangkok on Monday.

“We are aware of the bust made by our counterparts and are waiting for them to contact us to find out if the syndicate had conducted its ‘business’ here,” he said when contacted on Wednesday.

“Rest assured, if the syndicate is involved in selling drugs here we will be notified soon,” he said, adding that Bukit Aman has strong ties with their Thai counterparts.

It is believed that the syndicate leader had fled the country.

Bernama reported on Tuesday that Thailand smashed a local drug network, Mun Took Med or Fun Every Pill.

The authorities managed to unravel the network, described as the largest in the country selling drugs through social media, after nabbing a man and his wife, described as trusted money launderers for the network.

The officers from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) found a huge amount of money kept in several bank accounts, believed to be the ill-gotten gains from drug-related activity.

The drug network operated almost 10,000 social media accounts throughout the country with several hundred members and clients under each account and operating in all the 28 provinces in Thailand.
