A silver kind of day

Diver bags her third with three different partners

-

Malaysian divers Wendy Ng Yan Yee and Nur Dhabitah Sabri were no match for the formidable China as they settled for silver in the women’s 3m springboard synchro. But it was a triumph of sorts for Wendy, as she marked a wonderful return from an eight-month ban for doping with an Asian Games podium. Silat exponents Mohd Khaizul Yaacob and Mohd Fauzi Khalid fell short in their respective finals as the squad ended their campaign without a gold medal.

THREE silvers, three different partners.

Diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee made it a hattrick of silver medals in the women's 3m springboard synchro discipline to cap a triumphant return from an eight-month doping ban at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium last night.

Wendy partnered Nur Dhabitah Sabri to post a five-dive total of 298.23 points while reigning world champions Chang Yani-Shi Tingmao of China splashing to gold with 335.70.

North Koreans Kim Kwang-huiKim Mi-hwa came from behind to snatch bronze with 282.78 points.

Last night's success was sweeter considering Wendy had struggled through tough times to recover her fitness and confidence after testing positive for sibutramine, a substance commonly found in slimming products, at the Kuala Lumpue SEA Games last year.

Then, she had to return the two gold medals she won in the 3m springboard individual and synchro partnering Nur Dhabitah.

Wendy claimed silver in the same event in Guangzhou (2010) with Leong Mun Yee and in Incheon (2014) with Cheong Jun Hoong.

It was the second medal for Dhabitah in Jakarta after she combined with Mun Yee for bronze in the women's 10m platform synchro on Tuesday.

Chew Yiwei-Ooi Tze Liang produced an erratic performance to finish out of the medals in the men's 3m springboard synchro final on Tuesday.

Yiwei-Tze Liang did not execute the fourth dive well and dropped from bronze medal position to end fourth at the end of the six-dive contest with 396.27 points.

It was the first time since Guangzhou in 2010 that Malaysia failed to get a medal in the men's 3m springboard synchro event.

Tze Liang partnered Bryan Nickson Lomas to take silver in Guangzhou. Tze Liang partnered Ahmad Amsyar Azman to defend the silver for Malaysia in Incheon four years ago.
