Cops: Shooting club closed for not following rules
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Shooting Association clubhouse in Subang was temporarily sealed as the management failed to adhere to the stringent rules and regulations, police said.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor said Bukit Aman ordered the shooting range to close until it fulfilled all security requirements.
“We have to be firm as such centres involve the use of weapons.
“They (management) did not adhere to regulations, thus action must be taken,” he said after attending the state police monthly assembly yesterday.
On Monday, The Star reported the sealing of the clubhouse, with its armoury also ordered not to be used.
The report stated that this had put some 20 national shooters scheduled to take part in the 42nd South- East Asia Shooting Championships in Taiwan next month in limbo.
This is because they have no weapons or a place to conduct their training following the sealing. Police have placed the Olympic standard shooting ranges as off-limits.
The 20 shooters were supposed to take part in the Oct 22 to 31 championships in Taiwan.
Comm Mazlan advised other shooting clubs and ranges to follow all procedures and security requirements.
“If weapons and bullets go missing, it might endanger lives,” he said.
It is learnt that the club failed to adhere to regulations despite repeated warnings by the police, forcing the latter to take drastic action.
On June 27, a student shot himself dead in the toilet of a Subang Jaya college with a Walther GS pistol.
The 19-year-old was a member of the Subang club and had taken with him a pistol from the shooting range.
Following this, security at the clubhouse was ordered to be beefed up. The association failed to do so and this led to the police action.
Officials said the club served as the training base of the national shooters. It is also the permanent headquarters of the South-East Asia Shooting Association.
