Four birdies in last six holes send Sukree to the top

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran Sukree Othman birdied four of his last six holes to take a one-shot lead in the first round of the RM200,000 CIMB National Championship at the TPC Kuala Lumpur.

The champion will receive RM30,000 and a coveted spot in the CIMB Classic, which will be held at the same venue from Oct 11-14.

And the 39-year-old Sukree set the early pace in the 73-man contest by firing six birdies for a flawless five-under 66 yesterday.

R. Nachimuthu, Alex Tiong, Kim Leun Kwang and Amir Nazrin Jailani shared second spot on identical 68s.

Sukree is determined to build on the solid start to earn him a dream US PGA Tour appearance.

His closest attempts were finishing fifth last year and in 2016.

“I’ve tried to qualify for the CIMB Classic every year. Last year, I came in fifth so hopefully I can get it done this week,” said the eight-time PGM Tour winner.

“It’s a great chance to play against PGA Tour players as we’ll never get a chance to play in America.”

Amir, 21, traded seven birdies against three bogeys to stay on Sukree’s heels.

Amir is looking to make amends after coming close in last year’s bid where he finished third, one shot behind the playoff duo of Danny Chia and Gavin Kyle Green.

“The main goal is to win, but in the first few days, it’ll be important to keep up with the chase and stay in position,” said Amir, who only turned professional last year.

“I’ll try to keep my momentum going and minimise my mistakes.”
