WE all find the odd fair­way bunker from time to time, but there is none more mag­nif­i­cent or ter­ri­fy­ing than the one on the 14th hole on the Old Course at St An­drews.

The pros tackle this 10ft-deep mon­ster at the Bri­tish Open head-on and you can learn from their tac­tics.

As well as be­ing deep, ‘Hell’ – as the hole is known – is wide, mean­ing that you’ll have two choices: be ag­gres­sive and have a go at the flag or take your lumps and con­tent your­self with sim­ply get­ting it out of the sand and mov­ing on from there.

It all de­pends on how far from the face you are.
