KOTA BARU: Paskal the Movie, the first Malaysian film to highlight an elite force of the navy, has become the pride of the nation, says Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin.

He said the movie, which was inspired by true stories based on missions that have been declassified, has succeeded in instilling a spirit of patriotism.

The public, he said, tend to look up to military outfits from the West such as the United States’ Navy Sea, Air and Land Teams (Navy SEALs).

“We, too, have our own SEAL, known as Paskal,” he said.

The film, directed by Adrian Teh, focuses on seven men from Paskal (Pasukan Khas Laut) who went through a brutal training regime so that they could be a part of the navy’s elite team.

Admiral Ahmad said the movie was a result of a collaboration between the navy and Asia Tropical Films.

“The navy provided full support in terms of strategy, storyline and technical advice.”

“Every technique, action, verbal order and command must match the high standard set by the navy,” he said.

Paskal is tasked to conduct small-unit maritime military operations in river, ocean, swamp, delta or coastline.

Members are trained for unconventional warfare, guerrilla warfare, counter-guerrilla warfare, jungle warfare, counter-terrorism mission and hostage rescue operations, among others.

“The film is made to raise awareness on the importance of protecting national interest.

“Malaysia is a maritime nation, as more than 90% of goods are transported by sea and 80% of our revenue are from the sea, including oil and gas and other resources.

“These strategic interests must be protected,” he said.

Admiral Ahmad said the movie showcased the sacrifices made in the interest of the country.

“It has made many Malaysians, young and old, proud. How often do we see the audience clapping their hands after the end of a movie? Many Malaysians including leaders and politicians have posted positive comments on social media.”

“We are humbled, touched and proud,” he said.

He said the movie highlighted core values of the navy such as honour, loyalty, courage and pride.

Admiral Ahmad also recorded appreciation to the Sultan of Selangor and Sultan of Perak for decreeing that their historical mission in pirate-infested Gulf of Aden should be told in books or on the silver screen.
