Fake SD cards seized from mall

GEORGE TOWN: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry seized 1,744 units of fake memory cards worth RM26,000 from a shop operator at a mall in Bayan Baru.

Apparently, the secure digital (SD) cards were intended as gifts for customers. They were also sold for between RM15 and RM26 each.

The ministry’s Penang enforcement chief, Sapiah Mohd Nor, said the items were not displayed but kept in a store room and would only be taken out upon request.

“The counterfeit items are much cheaper compared to the original, which is priced at RM30 and above.

“One of the representatives from the company joined us in the raid as she could identify the fakes.

“I urge all business operators not to supply or sell fake goods as enforcement action will be taken against such practice,” he said, adding that the raid took place from noon to 3pm on Thursday.

He said the items were seized under Section 8(2)(b) of the Trade Description Act 2011, and any organisation found guilty could face a fine of up to RM15,000 for each counterfeit item and double the fine for the second offence.

He said individuals found guilty of the same offence could face a fine of up to RM10,000 for each counterfeit item or a jail term of up to three years or both upon conviction.
