USM lends a helping hand

50th anniversar­y celebratio­ns marked by a fund-raising tournament

THE inaugural AUSM Awesome Trophy charity golf tournament at the Mines Resort & Golf Club proved a huge success, both on and off the course.

The event, to mark the 50th anniversar­y of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), is part of a series of programmes and activities lined up, drew a field of more than 75 golfers, entreprene­urs and sponsors from Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Trengganu, Kelantan.

The funds raised were for USM’s Special Needs Children Funding Programme that caters for children with autism, deafness, blindness, downs, learning disabiliti­es and cerebral palsy, as

well as the upgrading and renovation works of the Persatuan Alumni USM campus in Penang.

The tournament’s organising chairman and Persatuan Alumni USM president Tan Sri Prof Dzulkifli A. Razak said: “We are delighted and grateful for good response from our USM Alumni members as well as the industry players from all over the country.

“They recognise our cause to tee-up to raise funds for the programme and we hope that the AUSM Trophy will grow further and generate more funds in the coming years.

“The tournament was also the perfect start to our USM50 celebratio­ns. It has been an epic 50-year journey for USM with numerous milestones achieved down the years.

“This charity golf tournament was an ideal meeting point for many of our USM Alumni members as they reconvened, reconnecte­d and re-establishe­d networking among themselves.

“Not only that, this tournament was also a great opportunit­y for our USM Alumni members to meet new people from the industry and start new friendship­s.”

Team No 6 emerged as the overall champions and comprised Amir Benno, Amran Mohd Nor, Mufek Zailani Arif and Mohd Zaidi Abu.

They each received a crystal trophy presented by USM Chancellor, Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullai­l.

The runners-up were Protellus – comprising Datuk Sazaly Hassan, Wan Shariman Abd Rashid, Hazem Abd Rahman and Nasaruddin Abd Basir.

The A Medal individual category champion was Mohd Sudirman Mohd Rodhi, while Zaiharin Tahir was second and Datuk Md Asri Ab Rahim third.

The Medal B title went to Atiah Noor Azmi, with Shaharuddi­n Hanapi runner-up and Datuk Norman Md Rabani third.

Syed Jamil Fadaak captured the C Medal honours, with Zainuddin Abu second and Mohd Fathullah Mohd Yusof in third place.

Amir Benno from Team 6 emerged as the champion golfer after claiming the gross title.
