FLOOD TIPS
BEFORE
Assemble a basic disaster supply kit in a waterproof container to include essentials such as a flashlight, first aid kit, sanitary products, medicine, food, tools and clothes.
Review your Family Disaster Plan and be prepared to evacuate.
Identify places in the home to store electrical appliances to minimise damage. Gather all important documents such as birth certificates, university degrees, and tax information in a waterproof container before storing on a higher level.
Download apps like MyJPS and weather apps to get current information on rainfall and river water levels.
Identify the closest evacuation centre. Once at the evacuation centre, do not attempt to return home alone.
Avoid wading in floodwaters as dangers may be lurking beneath. Turn off the electrical mains. Keep clean and maintain good hygiene at the centres.
DURING
Listen to instructions from authorities and be prepared to leave for the evacuation centre.
AFTER
Exercise caution when entering homes after a flood. Always wear safety boots, gloves, and masks when cleaning. Discard all spoilt food items and medicines and even those that have come in contact with flood water. Check gas pipes and electrical wiring in the home to look for damages. Avoid being involved in clean-ups if you have an open wound or cuts.
